John Scherer who was one of the past owners of Shady Bowl Speedway was hospitalized today with a heart attack. He is in a hospital in Lima. As of now we have no information on his condition, but as we hear, we will update.

Adam Cruea - U.S. Army
Adam Cruea, son of DARF members Laura and Bruce Myers, is serving a tour in Afganistan.
The camp Adam is stationed at was attacked by a suicide bomber on Friday July 2nd, when the bomber drove a vehicle full of explosives into the camp. Adam has spent some time in the hospital, but is doing ok. He reported that he was pretty lucky as some of the other soldiers are injured a lot worse than he is, but that no U.S. casualties were reported.

Audie Swartz Sr.
Audie Swartz passed away today June 30, 2010.
Audie was a former driver for many years in our area, driving many different types of cars, but mostly the ole Modifieds and Sprint Cars. He was the Father of Charlie Swartz and Grandfather to Audie Swartz along with Jimmy and Brian Stinson.
As we get more information, we will pass it along.

Danny Smith Injured
June 18, 2010
Just got word that Sprint Car Driver and DARF Member Danny Smith was injured at Attica Raceway Park tonight. Tonight was the first night of the Allstars Ohio Sprint Speedweek. As Danny was qualifying his throttle stuck open and he went head on into the catch fence separating the track and the pit area. He was conscious and alert but is reported to have a broken back and internal injuries. As we get more updated information we will keep it posted.

A friend of the Smith's reported this morning that the L-4 vertebra was broken in three places. Surgery is scheduled for monday. The L-4 is in the lower back, what is known as the Lumbar Spine area.

Danny's injury was described as a compression type fracture of the L-4 vertebra. He had surgery on Monday morning to fuse the spine above and below the fracture. His wife Stephanie reported on Monday evening that he was back in his room resting at Grant Medical Center in Columbus. A Fund has been set up to help offset some of the medical cost.

Chick Hale Hospitalized
Veteran Racer Chick Hale has been admitted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton for heart complications. Looks as if he will spend a few more days in the hospital, then will probably be transferred to a rehabilitation center for awhile. As we get more information on Chick we will pass it along. Accident Takes Life Of Open Wheel Racer
Open Wheel racer Jesse "The Rocket" Hockett lost his life today, May 26, 2010, in a freak accident. Jesse was preparing his trailer for upcoming races starting with Terre Haute, Indiana tommorow night when he was somehow electrocuted. This is sad news of the loss of such a talented young man. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family tonight.

Regina Adams, age 38, passed away unexpectedly on May 23, 2010.
Regina had raced Street Stocks at some of the local tracks around our area.
Services will be held 12:00 PM Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Rogers Funeral Home, Trotwood, Ohio. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until start of service.

Flyin' Floyd Gilbert , age 80, passed away Tuesday May 25th at a hospital in the Jacksonville, Florida area, after an extended illness. Floyd, originally from the Cincinnati area, raced at about every dirt track that ran Late Models.

Our condolences goes out to the Meihls Family on the loss of Bruce Meihls on May 18th. Bruce & his family were heavily invovled in area auto racing. Bruce was the owner of Fast Racing Engines in Groveport, Ohio for many years. We will update this as we get more information.
Bruce Meils, age 64, of Columbus, Ohio passed away Tuesday May 18, 2010 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. Born April 8, 1946 in Celina, Ohio. Bruce was owner and operator of Fast Racing Engines in Groveport. Survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary E. Meihls, daughters Yevette (Tim) Ice, Seville, Ohio, Dawn Ward, Urbana, Ohio and Eden Meihls, Kent, Ohio and four grandchildren. Father Harold E. (Jan) Meihls, St. Louis, Mi. and by one sister and two brothers.

Had a good meeting tonight for our last membership meeting of this winter. Nice crowd was on hand to listen to our quest speakers talk of their careers in racing. We would like to thank Rick Lane, John Mugavin and Marvin Goins for taking time to come out and be our quest for the Legends Night evening. Once again this year DARF has a great line-up of dates at all of the local Tracks.
First off DARF needs to thank all of the Tracks & Promoters for supporting our Club & it's Members. They are the ones that make this happen.
Second, before you head out to the track, check your DARF cards to make sure they are current, Tracks will not honor cards that have expired.
Third, tell a friend or family member about what DARF has to offer them, just maybe you can get them to become members also. Check out the DARF dates line up here on the website & start making plans for your summer at the Tracks.
Fourth, should you experience any problems at a DARF event, rather than create a scene, please contact the DARF representative present at the event so the proper actions can be taken. Remember the tracks are honoring the club with DARF dates. Thank them & tell them how much we appreciate them.

Schrader's K C Raceway Special Dedication Ceremonies
Schrader's K C Raceway season opener on April 10th will be highlighted with a special dedication ceremonies, honoring racing families from the past. Not only will some of K C's history be revisited to the times when K C was known as Atomic Speedway, but several of the track's most notable families will be honored. The families will each be honored with the naming of areas of the grandstand in their families name. To be honored with a bleacher section in their name will be Dean Knittle, Sam Erwin, Junior Spencer, Charlie McCann, Wayne McGuire, Delmas Conley, Audie Swartz, Merle & Larry Williams, Dan Reno, Bud & Joe Frazier and The Smalley Family. Each of the families intend to have someone represent them on this special night.
These honors is just another way that Jeff & Vicki Schrader & their staff is making K C a family & community oriented track. These families being honored have put countless years into racing at Atomic & now K C Raceway as these families are household names around the Chillicothe & southeastern Ohio area. Without the dedication of families like these it is almost impossible for any track to survive.
DARF would like to send our congratulations to these families on their honors.

DARF would like to thank everyone who participated in the Kids Car Show this year. We had a very good turnout of people & a nice variety of cars & displays. The money from this show means alot to these kids when they might need a winter coat, a pair of shoes, toys or whatever else they need to get by. We know this show has always been titled Toys for Kids, but there is way more than that for what this money goes towards. Thanks again to all the teams who brought their cars, to the tracks for their booths & to all the ones that brought their displays to show. And especially to all the fans for their support.

" Promoters Night "

CONGRATULATIONS
Appeals Court rules in favor of 35 Raceway Park against it's neighbors.
Tony & Melissa Boetcher at 35 Raceway Park had been taken to court by a few of their neighbors to try & close down the race track. The Appeals Court was quoted as saying that the residents exaggerated the degree of harm the race track caused them. That the race track was beneficial to the community at large in terms of part time jobs, a convenient location & prize money for racers. Everyone at DARF sends their congratulations.

DARF would like to send a congratulations out to The Nuckles Family for being named the 2010 RPM National Promoter of the Year. The Award was presented during the Racing Promotion Monthly workshops in Daytona Beach during Speedweeks. This makes them the 34th RPM Promoter of the Year. The Nuckles have been named Regional Promoter of the Year eight times in the last ten years. The Nuckles Family has operated Columbus Motor Speedway for 63 years.
